OCCUPY: Past, Present, and Future.”
Burt Gurganus, Heather Epes, Michal Osterweil, Spokespersons
Occupy Raleigh movement

[The movement is composed of a] group of concerned citizens who wish to raise awareness and demonstrate before the State Capitol in support of economic justice and against corporate influence over our elections and political process. Our purpose is to engage the public in this dialogue and make the voices of the people heard. We want local and national legislators to hear our concerns about ways to remedy economic injustice and the unfair influence the wealthy have over the political system. We are a peaceful, nonviolent movement that aims to encourage people to participate in democracy and use their voices to influence positive change. We are not a traditional political party nor are we trying to overthrow government…rather, we are a populist uprising that seeks to place the political power back in the hands of the people where it belongs.” www.occupyraleigh.org

Mission Statement. Members will meet to review the Summary of Findings generated from the prior meeting in October. Prior to this meeting, we will listserv and snail mail the report. We will seek out a vote from the membership on whether to move forward or to stop. We encourage all members to attend.

January 29

The Program Committee is working on a meeting devoted to John Rawls' theory of justice, specifically his difference principle. We are considering using the video of Michael Sandel's Harvard lecture on this subject.

Voting for Board Members

We will have our annual members meeting to vote on both the slate of candidates for the 2012 EHST board and the 2012 budget for this year. If you cannot attend give a written proxy to a member who will. That proxy can be a signed note or a printed email from your email address. Friends and visitors may attend this meeting but only members may vote. Contact John Holmgren if you have any questions regarding this meeting. Email: jholmgren@nc.rr.com, phone: 919 240-4187.

Annual IFC Collection

As part of our support for the Inter-Faith Council, EHST has a special collection for the programs they provide the homeless and hungry in Orange County. This donation compliments our contributions to the food pantry and monthly service in the community kitchen. Please be generous - we are still going through a time of economic hardship and the IFC is of direct help to those in need.
[Checks can be made out to the IFC.]

Events

January 20 - Tentative

EHST Bellwether Book Club meets to discuss The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. She was a poor black tobacco farmer whose cells—taken without her knowledge in 1951—became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, in vitro fertilization, and more.

We normally meet on the third Friday of the month (January 20) but due to interest from some who may not be able to attend at that time I am asking if Saturday (21st) would be a good alternative. If you wish to join us, please let me know which day you can and/or can't attend so we can schedule the meeting to fit the most people.Contact Jan Broughton, 919-419-1261, jlbroughton@nc.rr.com.
